Spurgeons Junior Secondary School

Following a significant change in Kenyan education policy over the past few years, there has been a shift in how many years are spent in kindergarten, primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Previously it was 3:8:4:4 years respectively, and now it is 2:6:3:3:3 with the senior years being broken down into 3 years in junior secondary school (JSS) and 3 years in high school.

To accommodate this policy shift, JSS’s have had to be developed, and in December 2022, the government directed that all JSS’s were to be located in current existing primary schools. Thus, Spurgeons Academy now includes a JSS within its boundaries.

There are many requirements to be met in order to develop a government approved JSS including, but not limited to, the following:

  1. An integrated Science Laboratory
  2. Computer Laboratory
  3. Home Science and Art Room
  4. Equipment and apparatus in the laboratories amongst others

Need:

The process of improving one of the rooms to become a Science Laboratory is ongoing. However, more need to be done including the infrastructures for the laboratory like worktops, piping, drainage, sinks, plumbing, electrical work, ventilations, grills, windows, etc . Additionally, there is need to have the text books, equipment and apparatus in the laboratory to enable the JSS learning run smoothly.
