Spurgeon’s Academy

School motto: ‘Nothing but the Best’

Spurgeons Academy is an implementing element of SCCK. It is an oasis of hope to marginalized children – especially orphans and vulnerable children – who live in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi, which is the largest slum in Kenya and Africa. Located on the edge of Kibera slum, Spurgeons Academy provides quality education and exceptional extra-curricular, holistic provision for all the pupils that are on its register. The school comprises a 2-year kindergarten, plus 6 Primary classes and 3 Junior secondary classes. The average number of pupils per class is 45.

The school has been in operation since 1999 and was birthed to give education to orphans and vulnerable children in the local neighbourhood who were otherwise unable to attend school due to poverty which resulted in an inability to afford school fees. The first year the school had 35 pupils, which rose to 108 the next year and today over 10,000 lives have been touched and transformed by the input and support of Spurgeons Academy. All pupils are admitted on a case-by-case needs-assessment basis and the many ways in which they have excelled in both curricular and extra-curricular activities has resulted in Spurgeons Academy becoming a household name in the slums of Kibera and Nairobi. These activities include but are not limited to ballet, football, music, acrobatics, athletics, tennis and theatre as well as academic excellences. Spurgeons has a strong programme of identifying and nurturing individual talents, indeed the first female mechanical engineer in Kibera slums was a Spurgeons alumnus and sponsored child.

Key behind the success of the children is the team of dedicated staff who often go the extra mile, or more, to instil the Spurgeon’s ethos in the lives of the children as they put children at the epicentre. To read the current staff list click here.

Many of the children attending the school are supported by sponsorship which pays for their school fees and educational requirements.  This programme element is run by Global Care International. To find out more about sponsoring a child at Spurgeons Academy please visit www.globalcare.org.
